MEMORY THRESHOLD
The proposal starts from questioning the monument´s actual role and traditional symbols the validity.
The following principles emerge from this reflection:
1. EXALT HORIZONTAL RELATIONSHIPS
Traditional monuments were characterized by being hierarchical and totalitarian architectural constructions. Human-artifact relationship was imposing and dominant, a vertical logic of greater proportions. We believe in a monument that fosters horizontal relationships that are a symbols of democracy. The monumentality proposed, exalts the dynamics of public space and community formation: stage events, exhibitions, concerts and community gatherings.
2. THE VOID MORE THAN THE OBJECT
On the surface we maintain the free largest possible area so the architecture is the meeting point of community activities. If the external form is not perceived, we remove its habitual visual hierarchy and the void becomes more important. In the underground void, the symbolic burden has more to do with the inner experience than with the form seen from afar. The monument or the notion of monument must be discovered, it is not explicit.
3. MOLDING MONUMENTALITY
The monuments notion its given through the management of the shapes molded within the project.
GEOMETRY: the architectural composition arises from the decision to create a central space open to the sky. This space has a square base. On the south side there is a space for reflection and expression of independence (permanent and temporary exhibition rooms). On the north side theres a space for reflection and learning (auditorium).
On the surface, public space maintains horizontality and permeability towards the metro building, taking into account the large flows that will take place in this urban connection space.
LIGHT: Inside, the atmosphere of the project remains dim, and is illuminated with three degrees of intensity depending on the hierarchy and the use of the spaces: the central space is the space with the highest hierarchy and therefore the most illuminated; Spaces in need of natural lighting like offices and documentation center are illuminated through patios. The spaces of the axis of reflection and memory: the exhibition rooms and the auditorium have the highest level of darkness.
